Pedregulho And Caldeirinhas

By John Murray

Our village of Caldeirinhas is buried in the central borderlands between The Serra Da Estrela mountain range and Serra Da Malcatas national park.

Surrounding, are six historic castles, multiple cycling, running and walking routes and many unspoiled and unrestricted Roman and Templar sites.

Locally, within easy vehicular access, you will find introductory short walks or mountain stomps, boulder climbing sites and local villages with cafes and restaurants.

The village name, Caldeirinhas derives from “Cauldron, Kettle and Boiler' It is generally 3-4 degrees warmer and more humid here than other areas and it's fair to say that we have our own micro-climate.

Whilst very hot for a few months in summer, and quite cold at night for a few months in Winter, our winter blue sky is beautiful and it feels gloriously warm throughout the year - It rains as well though!

Our house and guest accommodation building, it is said, was built by a giant man, on his own using a cow to drag the granite blocks from the mountain and was constructed using nothing more than levers and a donkey....

Given that many of the blocks weigh several tons and the front elevation is about nine meters high, the story is likely to be exaggerated...... or is it?

The build would have been expensive because of the quality, size and dressing of the granite and it is the most imposing old building in the village.

It is also said that the village was once located nearer to the river but some hundreds of years ago, it was relocated stone by stone further up the slopes to the current position.

With so many gems of antiquity, signs of a vastly larger population in the past, boulders to climb, paths to trek or cycle and abundant nature to see, you wouldn't expect a description or photo to touch the magic.

At our house, then, with our guidance (or not) come and find your own experience.
